What Did Prophet Muhammad Say About Jesus Christ?

The relationship between Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Jesus Christ (ʿĪsā عليه السلام) represents one of the most beautiful and often misunderstood aspects of Islamic teachings. For those seeking truth about what Islam genuinely teaches regarding Jesus, the words of Prophet Muhammad provide clarity, reverence, and profound spiritual insight.

Understanding what did Prophet Muhammad say about Jesus Christ opens a window into the Islamic worldview—one that honors Jesus as one of the mightiest messengers of Allah while maintaining the pure monotheism that all prophets taught.

1. Brotherhood Between Muhammad and Jesus

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described an extraordinary spiritual connection with Jesus that transcends time. In an authentic hadith, he stated:

“Both in this world and in the Hereafter, I am the nearest of all the people to Jesus, the son of Mary. The prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different, but their religion is one.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, 3443)

This profound statement reveals several essential truths. The prophets share one father in the metaphorical sense—their fundamental message of monotheism (Tawhid)—while their “mothers” represent the specific laws and circumstances of their respective times. Prophet Muhammad emphasized that no prophet was sent between himself and Jesus, establishing their unique consecutive relationship in the prophetic chain.

2. Jesus as Allah’s Noble Servant and Messenger

When asked about the nature of Jesus, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provided clear theological definitions that distinguish Islamic belief from other interpretations. The Quran, which Muslims believe to be the direct word of Allah revealed to Muhammad, describes Jesus in precise terms:

“The Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allāh and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him.”

(Surah An-Nisa 4:171)

The early Muslims, when explaining their faith to the Christian King of Abyssinia, articulated what the Prophet taught them about Jesus:

“He is Allah’s Word and a soul He created and sent down to the Ascetic Virgin whom no man had touched”.

This definition honors Jesus’s miraculous birth while maintaining his status as a created being and servant of Allah.

3. The Miraculous Powers Granted to Jesus

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ fully acknowledged the extraordinary miracles Allah granted to Jesus. The Quran mentions these signs:

“And [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], ‘Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of Allāh. And I cure the blind [from birth] and the leper, and I give life to the dead – by permission of Allāh.”

(Surah Aal-Imran 3:49)

The crucial phrase “by permission of Allah” (bi-idhni-Llah) appears repeatedly, clarifying that these miracles originated from divine power, not from Jesus himself. This teaching preserves pure monotheism while honoring the magnificent signs granted to this noble messenger.

4. Jesus’s Prophecy of Muhammad’s Coming

One of the most significant aspects of what did the Prophet Muhammad say about Jesus involves the prophecy of his own coming. The Quran records:

“And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, “O Children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allāh to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Aḥmad.”

(Surah As-Saff 61:6)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ identified himself as the fulfillment of this prophecy, saying:

“I am the [result of the] supplication made by my father Ibrahim and the glad tidings ʿĪsā delivered”.

The name “Ahmad,” meaning “the most praiseworthy,” is another name for Muhammad, connecting the two prophets across centuries of divine planning.

5. The Return of Jesus Before the Day of Judgment

Among the most remarkable teachings of Prophet Muhammad regarding Jesus is the prophecy of his return. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, surely (Jesus,) the son of Mary will soon descend amongst you and will judge mankind justly (as a Just Ruler); he will break the Cross and kill the pigs and there will be no Jizya (i.e. taxation taken from non Muslims). Money will be in abundance so that nobody will accept it, and a single prostration to Allah (in prayer) will be better than the whole world and whatever is in it.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, 3448)

The Prophet explained that Jesus will descend to defeat the Antichrist (Al-Dajjal), establishing justice upon the earth. Importantly, he clarified that Jesus will rule according to Islamic law, affirming Muhammad’s prophethood and the finality of his message:

“Then ʿĪsā, the son of Maryam, will descend to earth affirming Muhammad’s prophethood and a follower of his creed”.

6. A Warning Against Exaggeration

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was deeply concerned about maintaining proper theological boundaries regarding prophets. He explicitly warned:

“Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians praised the son of Mary, for I am only a Slave. So, call me the Slave of Allah and His Apostle.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, 3445)

This statement demonstrates Muhammad’s humility and his theological precision. He honored Jesus while cautioning against elevating any human—including himself—to divine status. Both prophets are honored servants of the One God.

7. Muhammad’s Deep Emotional Connection to Jesus’s Words

The Prophet’s love for Jesus is evident in his devotional practices. It is authentically reported that Muhammad ﷺ once spent an entire night in prayer, repeatedly reciting a single Quranic verse that quotes Jesus:

“If You should punish them – indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them – indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”

(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:118)

This profound act of worship, with tears flowing for his community, demonstrates how deeply the words of Jesus resonated in Muhammad’s heart.

The Testimony of Faith Concerning Jesus

Every Muslim affirms a specific creed regarding Jesus as part of their faith. Prophet Muhammad taught his followers to testify:

“I bear witness that ʿĪsā is Allah’s slave and Messenger, His Word (‘Be!’ and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam, and a spirit created by Him”.

This testimony encapsulates Islamic belief about Jesus: he is human, not divine; he was created through the miraculous word of Allah; he was born of the Virgin Mary; and he served as one of Allah’s greatest messengers.
