What Did Muhammad Believe in?

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) believed in a strict monotheism and ethical living for all society members. He believed in the day of judgment, where every soul will be held accountable for their actions,

His core beliefs summarize his long journey from a truth seeker to the final messenger. We need to explore the heart of the man who delivered the divine message.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was not just a leader; he was a man whose entire existence was shaped by a profound set of convictions. His life was a testament to what he believed in.

Prophet Muhammad’s life offers a profound study of how faith transforms an individual into a mercy for all humans. We will present some beliefs of what Prophet Muhammad mainly believed in before and after receiving revelation.

What Did Muhammad Believe In Before Prophethood?

Long before the first words of the Quran were revealed, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known in Mecca as Al-Amin (The Trustworthy).

This shows that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was a Truth Seeker long before he was a Prophet. His belief in Allah was not a sudden change, but a fulfillment of the values he lived by, such as honesty and compassion.

Even in a society dominated by paganism and tribalism, his innate nature (Fitrah) led him to unique beliefs such as:

1. Prophet Muhammad Believed in One God and Rejected Falsehood and Idolatry

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ believed that stones and statues could never be gods. He spent years in the Cave of Hira in a state of meditation, searching for the divine truth and the Creator of the universe.

In a society drowning in idol worship, where the Kaaba housed 360 idols. The Prophet ﷺ declared that none of those statues had any power whatsoever.

His retreat to the Cave of Hira was practical evidence of his rejection of idolatry. It also assured his belief that there is a Higher, Singular Powerful God (Allah) beyond the material world.

2. Prophet Muhammad Believed in Social Justice and the Rights of the Oppressed

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) believed that a society’s greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members as a moral obligation.

To give a practical example for what he really believed in, Prophet Muhammad valued the “Alliance of Virtue” (Hilf al-Fudul) to protect the oppressed people.

What Are the Prophet Muhammad’s Core Beliefs After Prophethood?

After the revelation began, Prophet Muhammad’s beliefs were clarified and strengthened by the commands of Allah the Most High. Therefore, Prophet Muhammad believed in the following:

1. Prophet Muhammad Believed in the Six beliefs of Faith and The Absolute Unity of Allah

The core of Prophet Muhammad’s belief was Tawhid—that Allah is the only One worthy of worship, and He is the Sustainer of all things.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) believed in the six pillars of faith. That is to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day.

When Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was asked about faith, he ﷺ said:

“That you affirm your faith in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day…” (Sahih Muslim).

2. Prophet Muhammad Believed in The Perfection of Human Character

Muhammad ﷺ believed that the ultimate fruit of faith is “Good Character.” To him, religion was not just rituals, but how you treat others.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“I was sent only to a perfect noble character.” (Al-Muwaṭṭa).

 3. Prophet Muhammad Believed in the Universal Equality and Human Dignity

He believed that no race or ethnicity is superior to another. This was a revolutionary belief in a world built on slavery and tribal pride.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ shattered the racial and tribal barriers of his time, believing that the source of all humans is one.

In his Farewell Sermon, he declared:

All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab… except by piety and good action.” (Musnad Ahmad).

4. Prophet Muhammad Believed in Mercy to All Creation (Even to Animals)

Prophet Muhammad’s belief in Allah as Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful) made him believe in the sanctity of all life, including animals and the environment.

When a man asked the Prophet Muhammad, “O Messenger of Allah, is there a reward for us in serving the animals?” He ﷺ replied:

There is a reward for serving any living being.” (Sahih Bukhari).

5. Prophet Muhammad Believed in Accountability and the Afterlife

Prophet Muhammad believed with absolute certainty that this life is a temporary journey and that every soul will stand before Allah to be questioned about its deeds.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

A person’s feet will not move on the Day of Resurrection until he is asked about his life and how he spent it…” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi).

6. Prophet Muhammad Believed in the Value of Labor and Honesty

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ believed that the best food a man eats is that which he earns with his own hands

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

No one has ever eaten a better meal than that which he has earned by working with his own hands.” (Sahih Bukhari).

7. Prophet Muhammad Believed that He will be a Witness Against all Nations

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) believed that the Quran was not his own words but the literal speech of Allah, revealed to him through the Angel Gabriel over 23 years. He believed in each word and each letter revealed to him.

Once, he asked Abdullah ibn Mas’ud to recite for him. When Ibn Mas’ud reached the verse, “So how [will it be] when We bring from every nation a witness and we bring you, [O Muhammad], against these [people] as a witness?” (Quran 4:41) the Prophet ﷺ said, “Enough,” and his eyes were streaming with tears (Sahih Bukhari).

8. Muhammad Believed in the Importance of Prayer and Worship

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ believed that humans were created specifically to worship Allah. The Quran states:

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ

“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” (Quran 51:56)

Prayer (Salah) was the pillar of his daily life. He prayed five times a day without fail, and encouraged voluntary prayers beyond the obligatory ones. He said:

“The coolness of my eyes has been placed in prayer” (Sunan al-Nasa’i, authenticated).

9. Prophet Muhammad Believed in Justice, Mercy, and Moral Excellence

Muhammad ﷺ believed that Islam demands the highest moral character. He said: “I was sent to perfect good character” (Musnad Ahmad, authenticated).

He believed in justice even if it went against his own interests or those of his loved ones. When a woman from a noble family was caught stealing, some companions suggested she be pardoned due to her status.

The Prophet ﷺ became angry and said: “By Allah, if Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad, were to steal, I would cut off her hand” (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

He also believed in Allah’s mercy. Once, he saw a woman desperately searching for her child among captives. When she found him, she clutched him to her chest and nursed him.

The Prophet ﷺ asked his companions:

“Do you think this woman would throw her child into fire?” They said no. He replied: “Allah is more merciful to His servants than this woman is to her child” (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

10. Prophet Muhammad Believed that He Was Allah’s Human Servant and Messenger

Despite all the miracles, despite being chosen as the final prophet, Muhammad ﷺ never claimed divinity or anything beyond being human. He believed his role was to convey Allah’s message, nothing more.

Allah commanded him to declare:

قُل لَّا أَمْلِكُ لِنَفْسِي نَفْعًا وَلَا ضَرًّا إِلَّا مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ

“Say, ‘I hold not for myself [the power of] benefit or harm, except what Allah has willed.'” (Quran 7:188)

Prophet Muhammad emphasized the idea of his humanity and corrected anyone who excessively praised him. He said:

“Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians praised the son of Mary, for I am only a servant. So call me the Servant of Allah and His Messenger (Sahih Bukhari).

He lived simply. He mended his own clothes, helped with household chores, and was never too proud to walk through the marketplace. He slept on a mat that left marks on his body.

Conclusion

Taken together, Prophet Muhammad’s beliefs form a coherent moral vision rather than scattered principles. Tawhid shaped how he saw power, accountability shaped how he saw life, and good character shaped how faith showed up in ordinary human interactions.

What stands out is consistency. The man known as Al-Amin before revelation carried the same honesty, restraint, and concern for others after prophethood—only now anchored in clear revelation and divine command.

Above all, he understood himself as a servant, not an object of devotion. That humility framed everything else: leadership without ego, worship without excess, and a message delivered faithfully, without claiming ownership over it.
