Did Prophet Muhammad Meet Jesus?

The question of whether Prophet Muhammad ﷺ met Prophet Jesus (Isa, peace be upon him) captures the imagination of seekers from all faiths. These two extraordinary messengers, beloved by billions, stand as luminous beacons in human history.

While their earthly lives were separated by centuries, their spiritual connection transcends time itself—a bond forged in divine purpose and eternal brotherhood.

This exploration illuminates the profound relationship between these two prophets, their miraculous meeting beyond earthly constraints, and the unified message they carried to humanity.

Did Prophet Muhammad Meet Jesus?

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Jesus did not meet during their earthly lives. Historical and Islamic sources agree that about six centuries separated their missions, a long interval during which no new prophet was sent.

Despite this gap, Islamic teachings describe them as the closest consecutive messengers, united by a single message: guiding people back to sincere worship of one God and moral clarity after a period of spiritual decline.

However, Islamic tradition holds that they did meet in a miraculous, non-earthly way. During the Night Journey and Ascension, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was taken beyond normal physical limits and encountered earlier prophets in the heavens, including Jesus.

This meeting symbolizes their deep spiritual connection and shared divine purpose, reinforcing the idea that prophets form one brotherhood, delivering the same core message across different times and communities.

The Historical Timeline: Six Centuries Apart

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) did not meet during their earthly lives in the conventional sense. Historical and Islamic sources confirm that approximately six hundred calendar years separated the era of Jesus from the birth of Muhammad ﷺ.

The period between Jesus Christ’s era and that of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them both) was approximately 600 calendar years and 620 lunar years. This was the period in which the light derived from religions faded, and people forgot the religious instructions conveyed by the different prophets and messengers in earlier ages.

Allah Most High confirms this gap in the Quran:

“O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger to make clear to you [the religion] after a period [of suspension] of messengers”

(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:19)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself emphasized this unique proximity, stating:

“Both in this world and in the Hereafter, I am the nearest of all the people to Jesus, the son of Mary. The prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different, but their religion is one.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, 3443)

This hadith reveals something remarkable: despite the centuries between them, no prophet was sent during this interval, making Muhammad ﷺ and Jesus the most immediate consecutive messengers in history.

The Night Journey: A Miraculous Encounter

While their earthly lives never overlapped, Islamic tradition describes a miraculous spiritual journey during which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did indeed meet Jesus (peace be upon him). This was the Isra’ and Mi’raj—the Night Journey and Ascension.

Allah Most High states:

Exalted is He who took His Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] by night from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

(Surah Al-Isra 17:1)

During this extraordinary journey, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ traveled from Mecca to Jerusalem—described in the sources as the “prophets’ home”—and then ascended through the seven heavens.

The authentic hadiths in Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim detail that the Prophet ﷺ met various prophets at different levels of heaven, including Jesus (peace be upon him), whom he encountered in the second heaven alongside Prophet Yahya.

This miraculous journey, which started in Mecca and passed by Jerusalem, the prophets’ home, was also the journey in which the Prophet ascended to the seven heavens and stopped near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha—a lote tree on the utmost boundary of the seventh heaven beyond which none can pass.

Jesus Foretold Muhammad’s Coming

One of the most compelling aspects of their connection is that Jesus (peace be upon him) explicitly announced Muhammad’s advent by name. The Quran records:

“And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, “O Children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allāh to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Aḥmad.”

(Surah As-Saff 61:6)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ acknowledged this prophecy, stating:

“I am the result of the supplication made by my father Ibrahim and the glad tidings Isa delivered”.

The sources also identify biblical references to this prophecy. The Gospel of John mentions the “Paraclete” (Firqalit in Hebraic), which means “the Savior.” Jesus is described as the first Savior who gave glad tidings of the coming of another Savior—a title that applies to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

A Brotherhood of Divine Purpose

The prophets are not merely historical figures who happened to share similar roles—they constitute a sacred brotherhood united in purpose. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ beautifully illustrated this relationship:

“My similitude in comparison with the other prophets before me, is that of a man who has built a house nicely and beautifully, except for a place of one brick in a corner. The people go about it and wonder at its beauty, but say: ‘Would that this brick be put in its place!’ So I am that brick, and I am the last of the Prophets.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari 3535)

This metaphor reveals that every prophet contributed to a singular divine structure, with Muhammad ﷺ serving as the completing element.

The relationship between these messengers is like a completed architectural masterpiece; while previous prophets established the foundation and walls, Muhammad ﷺ is the final brick that brings the entire structure of divine guidance to its perfect conclusion.

Their Future Meeting on Earth

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of their relationship lies in the future. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prophesied that Jesus (peace be upon him) will return to Earth before the Day of Judgment:

“Surely (Jesus,) the son of Mary will soon descend amongst you and will judge mankind justly (as a Just Ruler)”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari 3448)

When Jesus returns, he will not introduce a new law but will rule according to the Shari’ah of Muhammad ﷺ. As the sources explain: “Isa, son of Maryam, will descend to earth affirming Muhammad’s prophethood and a follower of his creed. He will be a guided Imam and a just ruler”.

This does not diminish the merit of Jesus (peace be upon him). Rather, it completes it—for prophets are brothers, each completing the mission of the other. The law which abrogates and substitutes all previous laws and has remained original and uncorrupted must be the law brought by the last of these prophets.

Recognition by the People of the Book

During Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ lifetime, those well-versed in previous scriptures recognized him as the messenger foretold by Jesus. The Christian King Negus of Abyssinia, upon hearing about Islam, declared:

“I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah and the one whose description we find in the Injil. He is the Messenger who Isa, son of Maryam, foretold the good news of his advent”.

Similarly, the Christian monk Bahira recognized the young Muhammad during a trade journey to Syria, identifying him through signs mentioned in scripture, including the Seal of Prophethood between his shoulders.

Allah describes this recognition in the Quran:

Those to whom We gave the Scripture know him [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] as they know their own sons.

(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:146)

The Unified Message of Tawhid

Both Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them) came with the same essential message: the worship of Allah alone. The Quran will record Jesus’s testimony on the Day of Judgment:

I said not to them except what You commanded me – to worship Allāh, my Lord and your Lord

(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:117)

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ clarified Jesus’s true status:

“I bear witness that Isa is Allah’s slave and Messenger, His Word ‘Be!’ which He bestowed on Maryam, and a spirit created by Him”.

Conclusion

The connection between Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) transcends ordinary human relationships. Though separated by six centuries in their earthly missions, they met during the miraculous Night Journey, and they will meet again when Jesus returns to complete his earthly sojourn under the banner of Islam.

Their message was always one: to worship the Creator alone and to live in accordance with divine guidance. Islam honors Jesus as one of the mightiest messengers of Allah while recognizing Muhammad ﷺ as the final prophet who completed the building of guidance.

For those seeking truth, this unified message offers a clear path. Allah invites all of humanity:

Say, “O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you – that we will not worship except Allāh and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allāh.”

(Surah Aal-Imran 3:64)
