The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described this reality beautifully when he said that faith wears out in the heart just as a garment wears out, and he would ask Allah to renew the faith in the hearts of his companions (Mustadrak al-Hakim).

1. Feeling No Emotion When Hearing the Quran is a Sign of Weak Faith in Islam

One of the clearest signs of weak faith in Islam is when the Quran no longer moves your heart. Allah describes the Quran’s effect on true believers:

“The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith.” (Quran 8:2)

When your faith is strong, the Quran stirs something deep inside you. You might feel awe, fear, hope, or love when you hear Allah’s words. 

But when faith weakens, the Quran can sound like any other text—just words passing through your ears without penetrating your heart.

The Prophet ﷺ explained: “When a believer commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart. If he repents and gives up that sin and seeks forgiveness, his heart will be polished. But if he repeats the sin, the black spot increases until it overcomes his heart” (Sunan Ibn Majah).

A person with strong faith feels immediate discomfort when they sin. They turn to Allah in repentance quickly, troubled by the distance their mistake created.

You might rationalize the sin, minimize it, or postpone repentance indefinitely.

The companion `Abdullah bin Mas`ud related to us two narrations: One from the Prophet (ﷺ) and the other from himself, saying: “The believer sees his sins as if he is sitting under a mountain which he fears may fall on him, while the sinner sees his sins like a fly that lands on his nose and he just brushes it away” (Sahih Bukhari).

3. Finding Prayer Always Heavy and Burdensome is Another Sign of Weak Faith in Islam

“And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily.” (Quran 4:142)

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are the Fajr and Isha prayers, but if they knew what is in them, they would come to them even if they had to crawl” (Sahih Bukhari).

When faith is vibrant, prayer becomes a refuge—the highlight of your day, not an interruption to it. You anticipate the call to prayer with eagerness. But weakened faith transforms this gift into an obligation you want to finish quickly.

People with thriving faith pepper their days with Allah’s remembrance. They say “Bismillah” before eating, “Alhamdulillah” after finishing, and “Astaghfirullah” when they stumble. These aren’t mere habits—they’re expressions of constant awareness of Allah’s presence.

When faith weakens, you forget Allah for hours, sometimes entire days. You go through life disconnected from the spiritual dimension, operating purely in the material world. 

This spiritual amnesia is both a symptom and a cause of declining faith—the less you remember, the weaker your connection becomes.

5. Failing to Stand Up for Islamic Values and Truth is Another Sign of Weak Faith in Islam

A believer with strong faith feels a sense of protective jealousy (Ghayrah) for the sake of Allah and the principles of Islam.

When your faith is strong, you feel connected to the broader Muslim community. Their pain touches you, their joy pleases you, and their needs concern you.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The believers, in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion, are like a single body; if one part of it complains, the rest of the body responds with wakefulness and fever” (Sahih Muslim). 

Weakened faith breeds spiritual self-absorption. You stop caring about the suffering of Muslims around the world or even in your own neighborhood. 

News of hardship affecting fellow believers leaves you unmoved. You fail to make dua for them or offer help when it’s within your capacity.

This emotional disconnection reveals a faith that has turned inward and shriveled. Islam is inherently communal—it emphasizes the ummah, brotherhood, and collective responsibility. 

When you find yourself indifferent to the state of other Muslims, recognize this as one of the signs of weak faith in Islam.

The early Muslims would spend sleepless nights worrying about believers they’d never met. They would weep in prayer for distant Muslims facing trials. This wasn’t exceptional piety—it was normal faith functioning as it should.

7. Excessive Attachment To The Material World And Its Pleasures 

While Islam does not forbid enjoying the lawful things of this life, an obsessive focus on wealth, status, or material gain is a primary cause and one of the signs of weak faith in Islam. 

When the heart is “filled” with the love of the Dunya (this world), there is little room left for the love of the Akhirah (the Hereafter). This imbalance often leads to neglecting spiritual duties in favor of worldly pursuits.

This attachment creates a constant state of anxiety and competition, as the material world can never truly satisfy the human soul. 

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized that true richness is not the abundance of worldly goods, but the richness of the soul. A weakening of faith makes the temporary seem eternal and the eternal seem distant.

Death, for the believer with strong faith, is like going home after a long journey. For someone with weak faith, it’s the ultimate catastrophe—the end of everything they value. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him; and whoever hates to meet Allah, Allah hates to meet him” (Sahih Bukhari).

8. Struggling to Leave Bad Company or Environments is Another Sign of Weak Faith in Islam

Strong faith gives you the strength to protect yourself from corrupting influences, even when it’s difficult. Weak faith makes you passive, staying in harmful situations and relationships because leaving requires effort or sacrifice.

The Prophet ﷺ said:“A man is upon the religion of his close friend, so let one of you look to whom he takes as a close friend” (Sunan Abu Dawud).

He also compared good and bad company to a perfume seller and a blacksmith—one leaves you smelling pleasant, the other covers you in soot (Sahih Bukhari).

When faith weakens, you rationalize staying around people who mock religion, normalize sins, or pull you away from Allah. You might tell yourself you’re strong enough to resist their influence, but the evidence of your declining faith suggests otherwise.

This extends beyond friendships to environments—entertainment that ridicules Islamic values, workplaces that pressure you to compromise your principles, or social media feeds that constantly display haram. 

A person with strong faith actively curates their company and environment. Weak faith accepts whatever comes, then wonders why iman keeps declining.

The companions who felt their faith declining would immediately increase their remembrance of Allah, attend circles of knowledge, increase charity, and seek the company of righteous people.
