Descendants of Prophet Muhammad
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ married twelve women and was blessed with both sons and daughters. However, by divine will, all his sons died in childhood: Al-Qasim and Abdullah, born to Khadijah, and Ibrahim, born to Maria the Copt. Therefore, all of the Prophet’s descendants came through his daughters.
While many people believe the Prophet’s grandchildren were only Al-Hassan and Al-Hussein, sons of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatimah al-Zahra, he actually had other grandchildren as well. His daughters Ruqayyah, Zainab, and Fatimah al-Zahra all had children, and the Prophet ﷺ was known for his deep love and strong attachment to all his grandchildren.
1. Al-Hassan ibn Ali
Al-Hassan was the son of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatimah al-Zahra, born in the third year of Hijrah. He narrated and memorized hadiths directly from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ himself named him Al-Hassan and gave him the title “master of the youth of Paradise” and called him his sweet-scented flower. Al-Hassan bore a striking resemblance to his grandfather, with fair skin tinged with redness and dark eyes.
After his father’s assassination, Al-Hassan pledged allegiance as Caliph but then relinquished the position to Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan to prevent discord among Muslims, fulfilling the Prophet’s ﷺ hadith that predicted he would reconcile two great factions of Muslims.
He had many sons and daughters and died at the age of forty-seven or forty-eight in the year 50 AH. It was said he died from poisoning and was buried in Baqi al-Gharqad.
2. Al-Hussein ibn Ali
Al-Hussein was the son of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatimah, born in the fourth year of Hijrah. Like his brother, he memorized and narrated hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ. He was described along with his brother as the master of the youth of Paradise.
Al-Hussein participated with his father in the battles of Jamal, Siffin, and against the Khawarij, and remained with his brother Al-Hassan until power was transferred to Muawiyah.
After Muawiyah’s death, the people of Kufa sent letters asking Al-Hussein to come so they could pledge allegiance to him. He went to Iraq but was met by Ibn Ziyad’s army. Al-Hussein refused to surrender but did not seek battle.
Despite this, he was martyred along with eighty-two men, including his sons, brothers, and his brother Al-Hassan’s son, on the day of Ashura in 61 AH (seventeen years after his brother), at the age of fifty-eight. His head was severed after his death.

4. Umm Kulthum bint Ali

She married Umar ibn al-Khattab and bore him two children, Zaid and Ruqayyah. After his death, she married Awn ibn Jafar ibn Abi Talib. When he died, she married his brother Muhammad, and when he died, she married his brother Abdullah ibn Jafar, and she died while married to him.
