Conversion Islam Phrase – Shahada and How to Say It

The shahada (also written shahadah) is the single most important phrase in Islam. It is the declaration of faith—the short, powerful sentence that makes someone a Muslim when sincerely professed: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” This article explains the shahada in Arabic and English, gives the common transliteration and step-by-step guidance on how to say Shahada, and references the Qur’an, Prophetic hadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), and reliable Muslim resources so you know both the spiritual meaning and the correct practical procedure for conversion.

What Is the Conversion Islam Phrase (Shahada)?

The Arabic word Shahada (الشهادة) literally means testimony or witnessing. When someone recites the Shahada, they are testifying that they believe in the Oneness of God and in Muhammad ﷺ as His final Messenger.

The conversion Islam phrase is:

أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدًا رسول الله

Shahada in Arabic:

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ

Shahada Transliteration:

Ash-hadu alla ilaha illa Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah.

Shahada in English:

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

This short phrase is the gateway to Islam. With sincerity and conviction, saying it aloud brings a person into the fold of the Muslim community and connects their heart directly with the Creator.

The Meaning Behind the Shahada

Every word in the Shahada carries profound theological, spiritual, and moral significance. It is not merely a sentence to be spoken; it is a complete declaration of belief, devotion, and life purpose.
The Shahada unites two essential truths: the Oneness of Allah (Tawheed) and the Messengership of Muhammad ﷺ—together forming the very heart of Islam.

1. “Ash-hadu alla ilaha illa Allah” – There is no god but Allah

The first half of the Shahada affirms Tawheed (التوحيد)—the absolute Oneness and uniqueness of Allah.

It declares that:

  • There is no Creator, Sustainer, or Owner of the universe except Allah.
  • None deserves worship, obedience, or ultimate love but Him.
  • Every act of devotion—prayer, charity, gratitude, reliance—must be directed to Him alone.

This phrase negates all false deities and affirms pure monotheism. It liberates the heart from any servitude to idols, desires, status, or material gain—affirming that only Allah is worthy of absolute submission.

Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’an:

فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
“So know [O Muhammad] that there is no deity except Allah.”
— [Surah Muhammad, 47:19]

He also says:

وَإِلَٰهُكُمْ إِلَٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ ۖ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الرَّحْمَٰنُ الرَّحِيمُ
“Your God is One God. There is no deity except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.”
— [Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:163]

This Oneness (Tawheed) is the foundation of all Prophetic messages. Every prophet—from Adam to Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all)—called their people to worship Allah alone.

Allah ﷻ says:

وَلَقَدْ بَعَثْنَا فِي كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ رَسُولًا أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاجْتَنِبُوا الطَّاغُوتَ
“And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], ‘Worship Allah and avoid false gods.’”
— [Surah An-Nahl, 16:36]

This part of the Shahada thus frees a person’s mind and heart. It teaches that no human being, system, or idea has the right to control one’s conscience — only Allah does. It establishes a direct relationship between the believer and their Creator, without intermediaries or partners.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the power of this testimony, saying:

مَنْ قَالَ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَكَفَرَ بِمَا يُعْبَدُ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ، حَرُمَ مَالُهُ وَدَمُهُ، وَحِسَابُهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ
“Whoever says: ‘There is no god but Allah,’ and disbelieves in whatever is worshiped besides Allah, his property and blood become inviolable, and his reckoning is with Allah.”
(Sahih Muslim, 23)

When a believer says “La ilaha illa Allah”, they are not only proclaiming faith — they are rejecting falsehood, affirming truth, and pledging loyalty to their Creator above all else.

What Does Shahadah Mean?

There are several meanings of the shahadah:

1. Believing that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was chosen by Allah

He received divine revelation through the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel), which was compiled into the Qur’an—the eternal word of God.

نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ، عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُنذِرِينَ
“The Trustworthy Spirit [Jibreel] has brought it down upon your heart [O Muhammad]—that you may be of the warners.”
— [Surah Ash-Shu‘ara, 26:193–194]

2. Following the Sunnah (the Prophet’s teachings and example)

His sayings, actions, and lifestyle explain how to live according to the Qur’an.
To follow him is to follow divine guidance.

مَنْ يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَ
“Whoever obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah.”
— [Surah An-Nisa, 4:80]

3. Accepting that he is the Seal of the Prophets

There will be no prophet after him, as Allah declared:

مَّا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِّن رِّجَالِكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن رَّسُولَ اللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ النَّبِيِّينَ
“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets.”
— [Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:40]

4. Loving and honoring him more than oneself

True belief in his message includes loving him sincerely — not merely in words, but by striving to follow his example.
The Prophet ﷺ said:

لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ وَالِدِهِ، وَوَلَدِهِ، وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ
“None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all mankind.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 15; Sahih Muslim, 44)

Why Is Shahadah Essential?

The declaration “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” is not simply a statement of identity — it’s a confirmation of obedience and trust. It means accepting his guidance as final, complete, and binding.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

كُلُّ أُمَّتِي يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَبَى، قِيلَ: وَمَنْ يَأْبَى؟ قَالَ: مَنْ أَطَاعَنِي دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ، وَمَنْ عَصَانِي فَقَدْ أَبَى
“All of my Ummah will enter Paradise except those who refuse.” It was said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, who would refuse?’ He said, ‘Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys me has refused.’”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 7280)

Thus, acknowledging Muhammad ﷺ as Allah’s Messenger is the completion of faith. It signifies accepting divine guidance not just in belief, but in daily life—in ethics, worship, and character.

Together, the Two Testimonies Complete Faith

The first half of the Shahada—”There is no god but Allah”—represents belief in the Creator.
The second half—“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”—represents obedience to His revelation.

Without the first, a person may believe in creation but not submit to the Creator.
Without the second, one might claim faith in God but reject His guidance.
Together, they form the foundation of Islam, a balance between belief and practice, faith and action, and love and obedience.

How to Say the Shahada?

Saying the Shahada is simple—but it must be done with full understanding, sincerity, and conviction.

1. Understand its meaning

Before saying the Shahada, one must understand what it signifies—a belief in Allah’s Oneness and in Muhammad ﷺ as His Messenger.

2. Say it aloud with sincerity

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever testifies that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and messenger, Allah will forbid Hellfire for him.”
(Sahih Muslim, 30)

3. Recite it in Arabic if possible.

You can begin by saying it in English to confirm your intention, then learn to say it in Arabic, as this is the language it was revealed in.

  • Arabic: أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدًا رسول الله
  • Transliteration: Ash-hadu alla ilaha illa Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah.

4. Say it before witnesses (recommended but not obligatory)

It’s best to declare your Shahada before Muslim witnesses, ideally at a mosque or Islamic center. However, Allah alone sees your heart — so even if said privately with sincere belief, it is valid.

5. Take a ritual bath (Ghusl)

After embracing Islam, it’s recommended to perform Ghusl (a full-body purification bath), symbolizing a fresh start and spiritual cleansing.

The Shahada in the Qur’an and Hadith

The concept of bearing witness to the Oneness of Allah ﷻ and the messengership of Muhammad ﷺ is deeply rooted in both the Qur’an and the Sunnah. These divine texts emphasize that recognizing the truth of “La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur Rasul Allah” is the very foundation of faith.

From the Qur’an:

شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ وَأُولُو الْعِلْمِ قَائِمًا بِالْقِسْطِ ۚ لَا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ
سورة آل عمران،  ٣:١٨

Translation:
“Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge — [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”
Surah Aal-‘Imran, 3:18

This verse affirms that Allah Himself bears witness to His Oneness, joined by the angels and people of knowledge — showing the magnitude and truth of the Shahada. It is not a human claim, but a testimony that Allah, the Creator of all, declares Himself.

Another verse reinforces this core belief:

وَإِلَٰهُكُمْ إِلَٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ ۖ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الرَّحْمَـٰنُ الرَّحِيمُ
سورة البقرة، ٢:١٦٣

Translation:
“And your God is One God. There is no deity except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.”
Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:163

These verses reveal the heart of Islam: Tawheed (the Oneness of God). The Shahada echoes this divine truth, binding every Muslim’s heart directly to Allah ﷻ without any intermediaries.

From the Hadith:

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the Shahada as the defining mark of faith and the gateway to Islam.

Translation:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“I have been commanded to fight against the people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and they establish prayer and pay Zakah. If they do so, their blood and property are guaranteed protection from me except when justified by law, and their reckoning is with Allah.”
Sahih al-Bukhari (25); Sahih Muslim (22)

This authentic hadith makes clear that uttering and believing in the Shahada is the dividing line between disbelief and faith. It grants a person entry into the protection, rights, and brotherhood of the Muslim community.

The Prophet ﷺ also said in another narration:

«مَنْ قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ»
رواه البخاري 5827

Translation:
“Whoever says: ‘La ilaha illa Allah’ shall enter Paradise.”
Sahih al-Bukhari (5827)

This demonstrates that the Shahada is not merely words, but a sincere affirmation from the heart — one that transforms the believer’s destiny in this world and the next.
